National Grid Failure Sparks Nationwide Blackout: 2024’s 6th Collapse

Nigeria is grappling with a nationwide blackout following the collapse of its national grid system, marking the sixth grid failure in 2024.

Recent checks by FirstNews confirmed that all distribution companies are currently receiving no power from the grid, leaving their feeders entirely without electricity.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko DisCo) addressed the situation directly with its customers via a statement on X (formerly Twitter).

“Dear Valued Customer,” the statement read, “kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 18:48 hrs, which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network.”

Eko DisCo assured customers that efforts are underway to restore power.

“We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as power supply is restored. Kindly bear with us,” the company added.

Also in a statement on X, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), said that the national grid collapsed at 6:58pm.

The repeated collapses of the national grid highlight ongoing challenges within Nigeria’s power sector, raising concerns among citizens about the reliability of electricity supply.

As the situation develops, stakeholders are closely monitoring efforts to restore power and prevent future outages.
