A motorcyclist lost his life on Wednesday in a fatal accident in the Apapa area of Lagos State.
The incident occurred when the motorcyclist, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, collided with a Dangote truck at Area B, Point Road, heading towards Airways.
The motorcyclist, who was carrying a female passenger, died at the scene, while the passenger sustained injuries.
Following the accident, the truck driver and his assistant fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, attributed the accident to reckless driving by the truck driver.
He said, โThe unfortunate incident, attributed to reckless driving by the Dangote truck driver, led to the immediate death of the motorcyclist at the scene.
โThe collision, which occurred in the early hours, was (as) a result of the truck driver losing control due to dangerous driving. The truck struck the motorcyclist, who had a female passenger on board.โ
The passenger, who was severely injured was rushed to the Apapa General Hospital for urgent medical attention.
โIn coordination with the Area B Police Station, LASTMA officers secured and removed the truck, handing it over to the police for further investigation,โ Adebayo added.
Meanwhile, LASTMAโs General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, has cautioned truck drivers to observe speed limits and ensure their vehicles undergo regular maintenance before hitting the road.
He also warned commercial motorcyclists to refrain from using prohibited routes, including highways and bridges across the state.
While extending condolences to the family of the deceased motorcyclist, the LASTMA boss wished a swift recovery for the injured victim.
