The House of Representatives has called on President Bola Tinubu to promptly transmit the 2025 budget proposal to the National Assembly. This resolution was passed during Wednesday’s plenary session following a motion moved by Clement Jimbo, a lawmaker from Akwa Ibom.
Jimbo stressed the importance of adhering to Section 11(1b) of the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2027, which requires the submission of the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) at least four months before the beginning of the next financial year.
The MTEF provides a three-year projection of revenue, expenditure, and budgetary policies, and is a critical document that must be presented before the budget itself.
Jimbo voiced concern over the delay in transmitting the MTEF and the 2025 budget proposal, emphasizing the National Assembly’s constitutional role in overseeing the appropriation and use of public funds.
He urged the executive to comply with legal timelines for the presentation and passage of the budget to ensure smooth governance.
The motion was adopted through a voice vote presided over by House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
The House also directed its committees on national planning, economic development, appropriation, and finance to ensure compliance within two weeks.
