SACKED: Manchester United confirm Erik ten Hag departure

Manchester United have dismissed Erik ten Hag following a poor start to the 2024/25 season, Soccernet.football reports.

The Red Devils currently sit in a disappointing 14th place in the Premier League, having suffered four defeats in their first nine matches.

Their most recent setback came in a 2-1 loss to West Ham United, where a late, contentious penalty from Jarrod Bowen sealed their fate.

United have not fared any better in the Europa League either. They currently occupy 21st place on the standings after managing one point each from their opening three games of the competition.

The 13-time English champions are now in search of their sixth permanent manager since Sir Alex Fergusonโ€™s retirement in 2013.

In the meantime, former striker Ruud Van Nilsterooy is set to take over as interim manager.

A short Manchester United statement read: โ€œWe are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.

โ€œRuud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.โ€

Ten Hag and United struggled for large parts of the 2023/2024 season and many would argue that he should have been replaced over the summer.

The new Man United hierarchy considered a change but ultimately decided to trigger the one-year extension in his contract.

Ten Hagโ€™s sack will come as little surprise to many given the start to the season United have had, especially with how disappointing their performances have been.

The Dutchman was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
