The Joint Security Forces (JSF) successfully rescued six out of eleven sports reporters who were abducted by gunmen in Anambra State during the early hours of Thursday, October 10.
The media crew was traveling from Lagos to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to cover the highly anticipated Super Eagles match scheduled for Friday when their vehicle was intercepted by assailants in Iseke, Ihiala Local Government Area.
The Ihiala region has been a hotspot for unrest, with reports of secessionist groups operating in the area in recent months. The kidnappers ambushed the journalists in a daring attack that has heightened concerns over security in southeastern Nigeria.
Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the rescue of the six journalists on Thursday, while efforts are still underway to recover the remaining five.
Speaking on the ongoing operations, Ikenga stated, “Operations are still ongoing for the possible rescue of the seventh crew member.”
While the identities of the rescued journalists have not yet been disclosed, the authorities have assured the public that they are working tirelessly to bring the ordeal to a safe conclusion.
Ikenga added that updates on the situation will be provided as new developments emerge: “Further development shall be communicated, please,” he said.
The abduction of the sports reporters has sparked renewed concern about the safety of travelers in southeastern Nigeria, especially as the region continues to experience pockets of violence linked to separatist movements.
Authorities have not yet released any information on the potential motives behind the attack, though investigations are ongoing.
The JSF’s rescue mission, which has seen partial success, underscores the challenges security forces face in maintaining law and order in areas under the influence of armed groups.
Families of the kidnapped reporters, as well as the media community, are anxiously awaiting the safe return of the remaining victims.
