PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), the former military head of state, in celebration of his 90th birthday.
In a statement issued today, the president described Gowon as an exemplary gentleman and a distinguished leader.
“On the occasion of his 90th birthday (October 19), I extend a special tribute to our elder statesman and former head of state, General Yakubu Gowon.
“General Gowon is a remarkable figure, one of Nigeria’s longest-serving leaders, who contributed significantly to our nation’s growth in various capacities, both in and out of the military.
“A Sandhurst-trained officer who reluctantly took the helm of leadership at just 32, his journey has been a source of inspiration for many Nigerians.
“During his tenure as head of state, he played a pivotal role in nation-building and can be credited as the father of national infrastructure development.
“Following the civil war, his ‘No victor, no vanquished’ philosophy helped foster peace, reconciliation, and national healing.
“One of his greatest achievements was the founding of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in 1975.
“Since my assumption of office, General Gowon has been a trusted advisor, offering invaluable guidance, particularly during moments of diplomatic tensions with some Sahelian nations, urging moderation for the sake of ECOWAS unity.
“Even after leaving office, General Gowon has continued to impress, furthering his education and proving that neither age nor status should hinder self-improvement.
“He has remained a force for good through his ‘Nigeria Prays’ initiative, advocating for peace, religious tolerance, and unity across the country.
“We owe General Gowon a debt of gratitude for his exceptional leadership and dedication to Nigeria’s progress.
“His legacy is an enduring source of inspiration for those of us in government, pushing us to strive for the betterment of our nation.
“I pray that God grants him continued wisdom, good health, and many more years of service to Nigeria and humanity,” President Tinubu stated.
