Following the chaos that unfolded on Monday after the local government chairmen elections in Rivers State, several local government council buildings were set ablaze.
The violence broke out after the swearing-in of the election winners by the Rivers State government.
Among the affected areas was the Ikwerre Local Government Secretariat in Isiokpo, where the building was reduced to ashes.
The unrest, which has gripped multiple local governments, has sparked widespread condemnation from community leaders and stakeholders across the state.
In response to the destruction, the Ikwerre Council of Chiefs, led by King Blessing Wagor JP, took a dramatic step by invoking the wrath of the gods upon those responsible for the arson at the Ikwerre Local Government Secretariat.
At a gathering of elders and chiefs, King Blessing Wagor expressed the deep disappointment of the Ikwerre people, stating that the burning of their council buildings was not just an attack on government property but an assault on the heritage and integrity of the Ikwerre people.
In a powerful display of cultural tradition, the council of chiefs performed ancient rites, calling upon the gods to bring justice to those who masterminded the act.
“We will not rest until the truth is revealed, and those behind this atrocity face the full consequences, not just in the law courts but also from the forces of our ancestors,” King Blessing Wagor declared.
As the state continues to assess the damage caused by the violence, local authorities are under pressure to ensure that security measures are strengthened to prevent further unrest.
Investigations have been launched to identify the culprits behind the attack, while the broader political climate in Rivers State remains tense.
