Renovated Abia State House of Assembly

Abia Assembly Moves To Address Health, Infrastructure, Education Concerns

Abia State House of Assembly has resolved to interact with the State Commissioner for Health and the Hospital Management Board (HMB) through its Committee on Health on the need to address the Deplorable State Of Umunneato General Hospital in Bende LGA.

This followed a Matter of Urgent Public Importance presented by Hon. Nnamdi Ibekwe representing Bende North State Constituency on Tuesday during the house Plenary Meeting.

Ibekwe, prayed the House to invite the Commissioner for Health for an interaction and also urged the house to mandate the School of Psychiatric Nursing designated to be in the Hospital to be returned to boost activities in the Hospital, so as to avoid further deterioration of the facilities.

โ€œBefore 1990, I recall white doctors used to consult there, and people from all over the state and outside the state came there for medical attention. But unfortunately, as I speak to you, thereโ€™s no single soul there. The buildings are overtaken by bullshit, and it would become a very dangerous haven for dangerous individuals whose activity might undermine that of the good people of Bende North.

Therefore, Mr. Speaker, honourable colleagues, my prayers are that the honourable commissioner be invited to explain why an institution so important to the people should be in such a state.

โ€œWe will need to make our inquiries from the Commissioner for Health and also the Hospitals Management Board and see what is going on there.

โ€œI believe there are some hospitals that will be rehabilitated very soon to know if that hospital is captured,โ€ Ibekwe said.

The Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa granted his prayers.

The House also resolved to invite the Heartland Construction Company and the State Commissioner for Works to its Executive Session for an interaction to find the details surrounding the Award of the long abandoned Umuahia- Ikot Ekpene road which has been in a Deplorable Condition

This Followed a matter of Urgent Public Importance presented by Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon Austin Okezie representing Umuahia East.

While appreciating Governor, Alex Otti for carrying out palliative work on the said road, Okezie regretted that the road is now impassable.

The House also resolved to draw the attention of the State Government on the need to Relocate all Street Trading Activities Opposite the Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture Umudike to Umuariaga Oboro Market In Ikwuano LGA

This is sequel to a motion Sponsored by Hon. Ishienyi Boniface representing Ikwuano State Constituency

Isienyi, prayed the house to urge the Ministry of Trade and Commerce to relocate the street trading activities opposite the campus to ensure free flow of traffic and also enhance the safety of workers and students of the Institution.

Reacting, the Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa urged the School Management to create an alternative market for the Students while making arrangements to move the existing Market to the Umuariaga Oboro Market.

The House also passed for its second reading H.A.B 26, The Abia State Education Reform Bill, 2024 sponsored by Hon. Anthony Chinasa Abiola representing Umuahia Central

The Bill was thereafter committed to the House Committee on Education to conduct public hearing and revert back to the House within 3 weeks.
