The Abia State government has announced free and compulsory education for all children in the state, regardless of origin, beginning January 2025.
This initiative, covering primary one through Junior Secondary School three in all public schools, was confirmed by Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, during a press briefing after the State Executive Council meeting.
Kanu warned that parents and guardians who disregard this new policy could face prosecution, citing the Abia Child’s Rights Law of 2006.
“It’s now an offence for parents not to send their children or wards to school because the government has made education free and compulsory,” he said.
Kanu added that the policy aligns with Governor Alex Otti’s goal to ensure quality, affordable education for the state.
