EDO Queens are out of the running for the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League title following a 3-1 defeat to Congo Democratic Republic’s TP Mazembe in the semi-final in Casablanca, Morocco last night.
The Nigerian champions drew first blood but TP Mazembe netted a late equaliser to force extra-time, during which they added two more goals.
Edo Queens, who beat two-time champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the group stage, had the final within touching distance when they took the lead in the 64th minute through Emem Essien with her third goal of the competition.
But TP Mazembe fought back and equalised six minutes from time as Mervielle Kajinga struck.
Edo Queens were undone in extra-time, first by an own goal by Comfort Folorunsho, and then a penalty by Marlene Kasaj in the 108th minute.
The Benin City-based Nigeria Women’s Football League title holders will now compete for third place against FC Masar of Egypt, who lost 2-1 to hosts and 2022 champions AS FAR of Morocco in the second semi-final on Tuesday night.
Edo Queens and FC Masar met in the group stage and the clash ended 0-0.
