The Federal Government has unveiled key initiatives to strengthen food production and enhance food security across the nation.
These measures were disclosed by the Hon. Minister for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, CON, during the 46th meeting of the National Council on Agriculture and Food Security held in Calabar, Cross River State.
In his address, Senator Kyari emphasized the government’s commitment to delivering agricultural inputs to farmers, repositioning agricultural institutions, and fostering deeper collaboration among farmers, herders, and communities.
“As priority actions, ongoing tasks include the delivery of agro-inputs to farmers, the repositioning of agricultural institutions, and deepening engagement among farmers, herders, and communities,” Kyari said.
He further outlined other strategic measures, such as enhancing water resource irrigation schemes, improving soil fertility systems, establishing research laboratories, and repositioning universities and colleges to align with agricultural priorities.
Kyari highlighted the significance of the council meeting as a platform to evaluate policies and programs at both national and sub-national levels, fostering best practices and innovation in agribusiness. He urged participants to uphold inclusiveness, transparency, and partnership to collectively advance the sector.
Representing Governor Bassey Otu, Cross River State Deputy Governor Peter Odey reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to supporting smallholder farmers with agricultural inputs and financial grants. He pledged continued collaboration with the Federal Government to implement President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s agricultural policies, aimed at achieving food and nutritional security.
Senator Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, emphasized the government’s focus on using infrastructure, technology, and entrepreneurship to unlock agricultural potential. He underscored the importance of sectoral linkages and social inclusion as key elements in driving food security.
The event, attended by state commissioners of agriculture, permanent secretaries, development partners, and representatives of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, featured awards for farmers and stakeholders who excelled in various capacities.
The council meeting serves as an annual forum for stakeholders to appraise progress, share best practices, and align efforts toward the shared goal of national food security.
