There is rising tension in Umuahia, Abia State, following an attack by gunmen on a newly established military checkpoint along Umuopara Onuimo Owerri road.
The assailants targeted the location early Wednesday morning, sparking fears among residents.
Authorities are investigating the incident, while security forces have heightened patrols in the area.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Army in a statement by Lieutenant Colonel Jonah Unuakhalu for Joint Task Force South East Operation UDO KA, confirmed the attack on it checkpoint along the Umuopara axis of the Umuahia -Onuimo Owerri road, says two officers lost their lives.
โDuring the attack, the gallant troops were able to repel the attack forcing the irredentist to withdraw in disarray with gunshot wounds, abandoning one Sienna and one Lexus Jeep vehicles that were used for the attack.
