HYPREP Launches Scholarship Scheme For Ogoni Postgraduate Students

The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), in a significant move to support education and community development in Ogoniland, has launched its 2024 Ogoni Postgraduate Students’ Scholarship Scheme.

The initiative, which aimed at providing educational support to students from Ogoniland, aligns with the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP) report in promoting unity and peace-building in Ogoniland.

Speaking at the sensitization workshop held in Port Harcourt, Project Coordinator Professor Nenibarini Zabbey emphasized the scheme’s integrity, fairness, and inclusivity.

He assured that equal opportunities will be provided to all candidates, with transparent processes and information availability.

According to Zabbey, HYPREP has been working tirelessly to address the environmental challenges in Ogoniland, with a focus on remediation, potable water provision, public health analysis, and livelihood programmes.

He said the scholarship scheme, which will covers 300 prospective post graduates applicants is a one – off grant, which will be facilitated by applicants from the four Ogoni Councils in the state will be based on merits assuring that the whole registration process is strictly online.

He added that the inititive is part of HYPREP’s broader efforts to create alternative livelihood sources in hydrocarbon-impacted Ogoniland, aligning with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report recommendations.

Zabbey,  however, stressed that supporting the organization is tantamount to supporting the development of Ogoniland. “To attack HYPREP is, in essence, to attack development and the future of Ogoniland,” he emphasized.

While acknowledging the importance of constructive criticism and innovative ideas, Professor Zabbey cautioned against propagating harmful narratives and misinformation.

“We urge you to be mindful of the information you share, especially concerning HYPREP’s mandate and work progress,” he said.

The Project Coordinator, expressed concern over the spread of false information, which according to him can undermine its work and affect the well-being of the Ogoni community. “Take some time to check and verify the information before you accept it and further disseminate it,” Professor Zabbey urged.
