IGP orders ‘severe’ punishment for corrupt officers over extortion

THE Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has denounced reported extortion activities by certain officers within the force across various regions of the country and has mandated “severe” penalties for those found guilty of corruption.

He cited the case involving officers from the Zone 16 Zonal Headquarters in Yenegoa, specifically ASP Emmanuel Ubong, Inspector Nse Okon, Inspector Adiewere Collins, and Inspector Kuromare Marine, who are accused of extorting ₦10 million from a group of young Nigerians.

In a statement released today and signed by the Force’s Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumiyiwa Adejobi, it was announced that the funds have been recovered through the efforts of the newly appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police responsible for Zone 16.

Adejobi further reported that the implicated officers have been detained and are undergoing an orderly room trial.

The statement added, “The Nigeria Police Force, led by IGP Egbetokun, upholds a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and police misconduct. The Force treats all allegations of extortion and abuse of power with utmost seriousness.

“The IGP has assured the public that all allegations against errant officers will be thoroughly investigated.

“In the pursuit of restorative justice, the Inspector-General of Police has mandated strict sanctions for any officer, regardless of rank, who is found guilty, reinforcing a deterrent effect for those who may be tempted to undermine the Force’s integrity.”

Additionally, Adejobi mentioned that the IGP has planned a workshop for police personnel on child care and effective investigation techniques.

“To ensure that officers are properly trained in child care and protection as well as effective handling of investigations involving vulnerable populations, particularly children in conflict with the law, the IGP has rescheduled a workshop with all Heads of Police investigative units to take place on Monday, November 11, 2024.

“This workshop will focus not only on enhancing technical skills but also on emphasizing key ethical principles for managing sensitive cases, with the goal of creating a child-friendly police system in Nigeria.

“By prioritizing compassion, transparency, and adherence to contemporary investigative methods, the Nigeria Police Force aims to cultivate a culture of professionalism and accountability among its staff, thereby reinforcing public trust and confidence in the organization.”
