Nigerian artist Jaywon has issued an apology to fellow singer Ayra Starr after being accused of mocking her for not receiving a Grammy nomination. Recently, the nominees for the 67th Grammy Awards were announced, and despite Ayra Starr’s impressive achievements this year, she did not secure a nomination.
Following the announcement, Jaywon, who has had an ongoing online dispute with Ayra Starr, posted a photo of himself holding two Grammy awards. Many interpreted this as a subtle jab at Ayra Starr, prompting backlash from fans and observers.
In response to the criticism, Jaywon publicly apologized, stating his admiration for Ayra Starr and acknowledging her talent. He clarified that his intention was never to demean her, emphasizing his commitment to uplifting others.
“If you see Ayra Starr, tell her I’m sorry she wasn’t nominated for this year’s Grammys. I’m a huge fan of her music, and I believe she’s one of the best female vocalists Africa has,” he wrote. “On this side, we don’t pull people down. We elevate, not just for today, but for the future. Ola Inu Kan.”
Jaywon is a voting member of the Recording Academy, which oversees the Grammy Awards.
