THE Lagos State Government has formalised its support of the Lagos international Theatre Festival, LITF, with a press conference addressed by the chief executive of the state, BAbajide Olusola SanwoOlu at the state house Marina, on Tuesday, November 5.
Addressing the full-house gathering of reporters and workers in the theatre and movie vocations, SanwoOlu, said the state counts itself lucky to be hosting such an event of international status. For this purpose, the state will throw its full weight behind the initiative of Mrs Bolanle Austen-Peters, founder of BAP Productions and Terra Kulture Art enterprise.
Twenty five theatrical productions are expected to be staged between November 14 and 17 at four distinct venues cutting across the Mainland and Island of Lagos: Terra Kulture Victoria Island; Glover Hall, Lagos Island; MUSON Centre, Onikan, and National Theatre, Iganmu,
Austen-Peters, the famed theatre and film director, addressing the gathering which also included some supporters of the project, Dr John Momoh, CEO of Channels TV and Donal Duke, former Governor of Cross River State, said she launched the initiative to bridge a gaping hole in the Lagos culture production and promotion systems, which makes theatre to remain an underdog discipline to its sister vocations such as the movie, music, and fashion.
“It is important for us to provide a platform where our creatives can explore, tell our stories, and export our positive philosophies and values to the world. This is why we are launching the Lagos International Theatre Festival, stated Austen Peters, director of such notable productions as SARO, WAKA, FELA & The Kalakuta Queens, among other stage shows as well as about five well-known films.
Theatre employs far more people than any of the other vocations, but it is less acknowledged, or supported by the governments and less recognised by the public, reiterated Austen-Peters, adding that the LITF, aims to build “a thriving community for thespians, enhancing excellence and promoting sustainability within the creative industry.”
“The creative industry is at the heart of every nation that thrives, and Nigeria is especially blessed with imaginative creativity and abundant talents. This is what God has blessed us with — the only resource that is infinite.”
Veteran actor Bimbo Manuel, contributing to the conference said his research had shown that every theatre production engages at least 35 other vocations including fashion, music, movie, cuisine etc, and thus it is one of the most resourceful employers of labour as well as source of livelihood for. ahuge number of youths. This makes theatre well deserving of great support by the government.
The festival already enjoys the corporate support of First Bank of Nigeria Limited, Dorman Long Engineering, Amstel Malta and the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts (formerly National Theatre of Nigeria).
