The legal team representing Stephen Abuwatseye, the Abuja Bolt driver who was assaulted by Alex Ikwechegh, a House of Representatives member from Abia State, has officially withdrawn their services.
Deji Adeyanju and Partners announced that their decision to step down was made to safeguard their professional integrity and uphold the highest ethical standards within the legal profession.
Recall that the assault occurred when Abuwatseye, while delivering a food order, was attacked by the lawmaker from Aba North/South at his residence in Maitama, Abuja. Following the incident, Ikwechegh was brought before a Kuje Magistrate Court in Abuja and later granted bail.
On the 7th of November, 2024, Abuwatseye issued a public apology to Ikwechegh, calling for unity among Nigerians.
In response, Zainab Ortega, spokesperson for the law firm, released a statement which reads: “We wish to formally announce the withdrawal of our legal representation in the case involving the alleged assault of Mr. Stephen Abuwatseye.
“On October 28, 2024, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseye approached our firm, clearly distressed, seeking legal redress for an alleged assault. After verifying his claims, we took steps to protect his rights on a pro bono basis, which led to the arraignment of the accused.
“However, due to recent developments and after careful deliberation, we have chosen to withdraw our legal representation in order to preserve our professional integrity and uphold the ethical standards of our profession.
“We wish Mr. Stephen Abuwatseye all the best in his future endeavors and remain committed to protecting the rights of the oppressed and disadvantaged members of society.”
