A Washington DC-based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Mboho Ndito Ibibio has launched a major educational intervention aimed at providing scholarships and essential resources for primary school students in Akwa Ibom State.
The initiative unveiled at Qua Iboe Church Primary School in Ikot Obio Ndoho, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, seeks to offer much-needed support to underprivileged pupils and inspire a commitment to education as a stepping stone to future leadership.
Mr. Ukoiden Ibok Esema, President of MNI Washington DC, expressed concern during the launch about the state’s struggling public education system, which he noted has contributed to a high dropout rate among young students.
.To address this issue, Esema revealed that MNI has established a committee specifically focusing on reducing the number of out-of-school children through targeted educational interventions.
In its first phase, MNI provided educational supplies to over 250 students from four public primary schools in Mkpat Enin LGA, including Saint Paul Catholic School, Ekim; Godly Heritage Model School; Sheda Nursery and Primary School, Ikot Aba; and Qua Iboe Church Primary School, Ikot Obio Ndoho. Each student received branded notebooks, writing materials, backpacks, and other school essentials to support their learning journey.
Esema explained that MNI’s emphasis on education and scholarships followed in-depth research which identified these areas as urgent priorities.
He commended Governor Umo Eno’s commitment to revitalizing the state’s education system under his ARISE Agenda, noting that the governor’s vision aligns with MNI’s goals.
Akwa Ibom’s Commissioner for Education, Mra Idongesit Etiebet, and the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Stella Etukakpan, represented at the event by Ministry officials Mrs. Mercy Okure and Mrs. Evelyn Ndatah, applauded MNI’s efforts stating that the intervention would significantly reduce the number of out-of-school children, especially in rural areas, and called on other philanthropic organizations and civil society groups to emulate MNI’s impactful approach to community support.
Theresa Donatus, the project coordinator in the state expressed gratitude for the chance to lead this impactful initiative. “Together, we have provided essential resources to young minds who need them most,” she shared, reflecting on the profound impact the project had on students and their families.
Donatus also extended thanks to Dr. Grace Inyang, Chairperson of the Project Committee, and her family for their generosity in hosting pupils and staff with meals and refreshments, a gesture deeply appreciated by the community.
She pledged her commitment to MNI’s mission of empowering rural communities through educational support, stating that the organization would continue its efforts to uplift young pupils in underserved areas across Akwa Ibom State.
