Edo State’s newly inaugurated Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has vowed to deliver on promises of democratic dividends, enhanced security, and economic revitalization in a speech during his swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday.
The event took place at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, marking his official transition to office approximately two months after securing victory in the September 21 governorship election.
Addressing the crowd, Governor Okpebholo expressed his gratitude to the people for their support and confidence.
“Today, you have officially given me the mandate to preside over our dear State as Governor for the next four years,” he stated.
“We will not betray this confidence you have reposed in me and the Deputy Governor, Rt. Honourable Dennis Idahosa.”
The new governor took a moment to acknowledge the peaceful conduct of the electoral process.
“Let me start by thanking God Almighty for His grace and incredible blessings. Democracy has triumphed again in our dear State,” he said.
“For me, this is a humbling moment; made possible by you all. Again, I want to use this opportunity to thank you for your peaceful conduct during the 21st September 2024 Governorship Election.”
In his remarks, Governor Okpebholo emphasized that the well-being of Edo’s citizens would be at the forefront of his administration’s priorities, with a strong focus on supporting small businesses.
“The welfare of our citizens is top priority for us,” he affirmed, pledging to empower entrepreneurs and stimulate economic growth.
Governor Okpebholo also addressed pressing issues such as infrastructure and security, pointing to the challenging state of the roads and rising insecurity.
“The deplorable condition of our roads has made it difficult for people to move from one part of the State to another,” he observed, noting the impact of these conditions on local commerce and daily life.
He further pledged to tackle crime head-on, stressing his commitment to making Edo safer for all.
“We will be firm in dealing with criminals and improve the security of our land so that farming and other business activities will flourish again,” he promised.
As the new administration begins, Edo residents and stakeholders are watching closely, hopeful that Okpebholo’s promises of transformation will soon materialize in tangible improvements across the state.
