The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, has declared its support for the election of the Ondo state governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Aiyedatiwa is the standard bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November 16 gubernatorial election in the state.
He was deputy governor and was sworn in as governor after the demise of Rotimi Akeredolu in 2023.
Apart from Afenifere, the traditional rulers in Akoko South-West Local Government Area of the state have also thrown their weight behind the governor.
Afenifere and the monarchs endorsed Aiyedatiwaโs candidature over the weekend in Oka-Akoko during the governorโs campaign in the local government area.
A prominent leader of Afenifere, Bashorun Sehinde Arogbofa, declared that Aiyedatiwa was the preferred choice of the organisation.
Arogbofa, who is a former secretary of the Yoruba apex group, advised the governor to follow the enviable path of the first executive governor of the state, the late Chief Adekunle Ajasin, by emulating his values.
He said: โThe Afenifere stands firmly behind your mandate. You have shown promise and leadership. We are confident in your ability to lead Ondo State to greater heights.
โFollow the legacy of Chief Ajasin. Strive to make Ondo state great once again, as he once did.โ
The Olubaka of Okaland, Oba Yusuf Adebori Adeleye, declared that the traditional rulers in the local government area had decided to back Aiyedatiwa.
Oba Adeleye said: โThe Council of Obas has decided. Governor Aiyedatiwa is our candidate. On behalf of all traditional rulers here, we stand together in support of your election, assured by your commitment to our communities.
โSince 1999, we have been advocating for five percent local government funds to traditional institutions in the state. Many promised, but it was Governor Aiyedatiwa who made it a reality. This step alone speaks volumes about your dedication to our welfare.โ
โWe are deeply appreciative of the opportunities youโve provided for our people, a testament to your regard for our council area.โ
Aiyedatiwa appreciated the support from the traditional rulers and the Afenifere leaders and promised to justify their trust in him.
โYour confidence in my administration strengthens my resolve to serve with even greater commitment. My vision for Ondo state aligns closely with the aspirations of our people. I am dedicated to building a legacy of growth and unity.
โOur heritage and traditions are the backbone of our identity. I am fully committed to preserving them and ensuring they are woven into the progress we aspire to bring to every part of this great state.
โMy commitment to your welfare is unwavering. If given the chance to continue serving, I promise to work even harder to bring about the progress and support that our communities deserve,โ Governor Aiyedatiwa said.
