Real Madrid set sights on 18 G/A Liverpool target as Toni Kroos’s successor

Real Madrid are targeting Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi as a potential long-term replacement for Toni Kroos, Soccernet.football reports.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, the reigning European champions are keen to bring in a midfielder during the 2025 summer transfer window to address the gap left by Kroos’s departure.

Zubimendi, now 25, has steadily established himself as one of La Liga’s standout midfielders since breaking into Real Sociedad’s first team.

The San Sebastian native, who took his first steps in the Basque club’s youth academy, initially had to wait until he was 20 to make his senior debut. But since then, he has become a mainstay in Sociedad’s midfield, amassing over 200 appearances and contributing nine goals and nine assists.

In addition to his impressive club performances, Zubimendi has also become a fixture for Spain. He played a key role in Luis de la Fuente’s squad that lifted the UEFA Euro 2024 trophy.

His progress has drawn attention from top clubs including Liverpool, with Real Madrid reportedly among his admirers as they look to rejuvenate their midfield.

Real Madrid’s interest in Zubimendi highlights their ongoing struggle to fill the void left by Kroos.

Since the German maestro’s departure, the club has explored several midfield options, and Zubimendi is seen as a promising candidate who could seamlessly integrate into their setup.

While Premier League giants have also shown interest, reports suggest that Zubimendi’s preference is to stay in Spain, potentially giving Real Madrid the edge.

A move across La Liga to the Santiago Bernabeu appears increasingly likely, as Real Madrid weigh up a bid for the Euro 2024 winner.
