In a significant development for education in Rivers State, the government has officially begun implementing a new retirement policy for teachers, raising the retirement age from 60 to 65 years and extending the maximum length of service from 35 to 40 years.
The decision, effective as of September 23, 2024, aligns with the Federal Government’s Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers Act, 2022.
The implementation, approved by His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, is a response to the need for enhanced educational continuity and teacher retention within the state.
According to Dr. George C. Nwaeke, Head of Service of Rivers State, this policy change is exclusive to classroom teachers. Non-teaching staff in primary, post-primary schools, and education boards will continue to retire at 60 years or after 35 years of service, whichever comes first.
“This is a strategic decision to ensure the retention of experienced educators and continuity in the classroom, which is crucial for the quality of education in the state,” Dr. Nwaeke stated in an official release.
However, the circular stipulates that teachers benefiting from this policy must be registered professionals with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN).
Importantly, retirement benefits will remain calculated based on the previous 60-year age limit or 35-year service mark. Teachers who prefer not to continue under the extended terms can opt to retire according to the current Public Service Rules.
This policy shift marks a progressive step for the educational sector in Rivers State, potentially enhancing the teaching environment by retaining experienced educators longer.
The Head of Service urged all educational boards and institutions to ensure staff are fully informed and comply with the updated guidelines.
