Sudden frequency rise caused today’s grid collapse, recovery ongoing – TCN

THE Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has attributed the recent collapse of the national grid today to a sudden increase in frequency from 50.33Hz to 51.44Hz.

In a statement from TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah, it was noted that disturbances on the grid, which occurred for the second time in three days, began around 11:29 a.m. today.

Mbah mentioned that recovery efforts were initiated promptly, with the Abuja Axis restored within 28 minutes, and that efforts to restore the grid are still ongoing.

The TCN explained that the frequency spike resulted from issues at one of its substations, which had to be taken offline to prevent further complications.

The company also indicated it is actively involved in substantial repair work on several essential transmission lines and substations, including upgrades to the 330kV transmission lines along the Shiroro–Mando axis, significant improvements at the Jebba Transmission Substation, and the restoration of the second Ugwuaji–Apir 330kV transmission line.

“Moreover, following the submission of the investigative report regarding previous grid collapses, we have commenced addressing the identified weaknesses in the transmission system.

“We are taking steps to rectify the gaps highlighted in the report and to enhance the overall stability and resilience of the grid. These actions involve both technical upgrades and strategic interventions based on the committee’s recommendations.

“However, it is crucial to understand that while these repairs and enhancements are in progress, some level of instability in the system may continue until all major work is completed. We recognize the impact of these disruptions and appreciate the public’s understanding and patience during this challenging time,” the statement partially noted.

The company emphasized its commitment to improving the reliability of electricity supply, acknowledging the essential role that stable power plays in Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

“We assure the public that all necessary measures are being implemented to ensure the long-term stability of the grid, in accordance with the recommendations of the investigative committee, while also addressing infrastructure damage such as vandalized transmission lines,” it added.

Today’s incident adds to the increasing instances of grid collapses in the country.

On Tuesday, numerous areas in Nigeria experienced blackouts after a collapse occurred, leaving millions of homes without power while awaiting full restoration of the system.

TCN attributed the previous incident to “a series of line and generator trippings that led to instability in the grid and, consequently, caused partial disruptions in the system.”
