Suspension on Edo security outfit, previously known as the Edo State Security Network, but later renamed Edo State Security Corps, has been lifted.

The suspension was initially imposed by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in September 2024, ahead of the stateโ€™s governorship election.

In a statement on Friday, the Chief Press Secretary to the state governor, Fred Itua, explained that the reinstatement marks a significant shift in the stateโ€™s security approach.

He stated, โ€œThe decision made by the Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, marks a comprehensive shift in the stateโ€™s quest for enhanced safety and security.

โ€œThe suspension, which was initiated by the Inspector General of Police ahead of the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election, was based on the constitutional stipulation that election security is the sole responsibility of the Nigeria Police Force, assisted by other sister agencies within the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES).

โ€œHowever, with the successful conduct of the gubernatorial election, the Edo State Government has deemed it necessary to reinstate the security outfit.

โ€œThis move aims to bolster the stateโ€™s security apparatus and ensure the safety of its citizens.โ€

The government directed all returning officers to report to the office of the State Commander or their respective zonal offices in the North, Central, and South regions for a seamless transition and effective deployment.

Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikilor, emphasised the administrationโ€™s dedication to safeguarding lives and property. He reiterated the governmentโ€™s commitment to improving security across the state.
