United Bank for Africa (UBA) has announced a landmark agreement to commence full banking operations in France, marking a significant milestone in the bank’s global expansion.
In a statement released on Thursday, UBA disclosed that the deal was formalised during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to France.
The signing ceremony featured UBA Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, French Finance Minister Antoine Armand, President Tinubu, and French President Emmanuel Macron.
Speaking at the event, Elumelu highlighted the importance of the partnership.
“This partnership reinforces our commitment to seamless international banking services for our customers, not just across the 11 Francophone African countries we serve, but Africa as a whole and French and European customers transacting with Africa.
“Expanding into France is a natural progression, with Paris serving as our European Union hub as we continue to bring Africa and the world together through innovative financial solutions.
“Paris will join London, New York, and Dubai as a critical component of our unique global network,” he added.
The agreement places UBA among Nigeria’s top-tier banks with a presence in France, further strengthening its international footprint.
President Tinubu, who arrived in France on Thursday for a two-day state visit, emphasised the significance of fostering stronger economic and diplomatic ties between Nigeria and France.
This marks the first official state visit by a Nigerian leader to Paris in over two decades.
French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Tinubu with a personal touch, writing in Nigerian Pidgin English, “Na big honour for France to welcome you for dis state visit,” underscoring the cultural connection between the two leaders.
