UEFA has handed out heavy sanctions to FC Twente for the racist abuse of Super Eagles midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.
The European football governing body fined the Dutch club €83,125 and ordered that their stadium be closed following their fans’ racist and discriminatory behaviour towards the Nigeria international and his teammate, Loum Tchaouna, during last month’s UEFA Europa League clash.
The sanctions followed investigations into alleged racist chants directed at Dele-Bashiru and Tchaouna at the De Grolsch Veste Stadium during matchday 3 fixture of the competition, which Lazio won 2-0.
Consequently, the European UEFA’s hammer has fallen on the Dutch club after being found guilty.
The body wrote in a statement: “The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) has taken the following decisions:
“To fine FC Twente €40,000 and to order the partial closure of FC Twente’s stadium (i.e. 2.000 adjacent seats in the West stand behind the goal) during the next one (1) UEFA competition match in which FC Twente will play as host club, for the racist and/or discriminatory behaviour of its supporters.
“To fine FC Twente €10,000 for transmitting a message that is not fit for a sports event.
“To fine FC Twente €33,125 for throwing of objects,” UEFA wrote on their website on Friday.
FC Twente have confirmed UEFA’s decision and vowed to impose a stadium ban on those responsible, as well as recover the fines from them.
The Eredivisie side will host Union Saint-Gilloise on November 28, in their next home game in the competition.
Dele-Bashiru who provided the assist for his side’s second goal against FC Twente in the game, has been impressive in the Europa League.
The Nigeria international scored and made an assist on his debut against Dynamo Kiev.
