Tragedy struck on Christmas Day as suspected armed herders attacked several communities in Nyiev-ya, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, leaving at least 11 people dead and many others missing.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers invaded Ubutu and GSS Anwase communities, killing residents and torching homes.
A resident, speaking anonymously, said, “Daniel Jam’s son was among those killed by the terrorists. The situation is devastating. We need urgent intervention from the government.”
Simultaneously, the nearby Tse Azege and Ityuluv communities came under assault as well.
Reports indicate that the attackers, armed with sophisticated weapons, carried out the attacks with no apparent provocation, leaving families grieving during what should have been a festive period.
The President General of Mzough U Tiv (MUT) Worldwide, CP Iorbee Ihagh (retired), condemned the attack, describing it as unprovoked. “Leaders of the affected communities have reported the killings to the police. This is a clear escalation of the ongoing insecurity in the state,” he said.
Another local leader, Solomon Amande, confirmed the death toll and accused armed herders and militia groups of carrying out the attacks.
He also highlighted the growing fear among residents, many of whom are now displaced and in need of aid.
Meanwhile, the Benue State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incidents in both Kwande and Katsina-Ala local government areas.
When contacted, the Command’s spokesperson, Sewuese Anene, said she was not yet informed about the attacks.
The attacks have sparked renewed calls for urgent government intervention and improved security measures to protect rural communities in Benue State.
As the affected families mourn their loved ones, there is growing frustration over the lack of timely responses to recurring violence in the region.
