35 Minors Confirmed Dead in Ibadan Stampede, Ooni’s Ex-Wife Arrested

No fewer than 35 minors have been confirmed dead following a stampede at a funfair organized at Islamic High School, Orita Bashorun, Ibadan, on Wednesday.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting widespread condemnation and demands for accountability.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, vowing to uncover the circumstances that led to the loss of young lives.

He extended his condolences to the grieving families and pledged to bring all those responsible to justice.

The Oyo State Police Command announced on Thursday that seven individuals, including the former queen of the Ooni of Ife, Naomi Silekunola, have been arrested in connection with the tragedy.

According to the Command’s spokesman, Adewale Osifeso, the ex-queen was identified as the principal sponsor of the ill-fated event.

Other individuals arrested include the school’s principal, Fasasi Abdulahi, alongside Genesis Christopher, Tanimowo Moruf, Anisolaja Olabode, Idowu Ibrahim, and Abiola Oluwatimilehin.

In addition to the fatalities, six individuals were critically injured and are currently undergoing treatment at a medical facility.

Osifeso revealed that the case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Iyaganku, with the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the investigation.

He reassured residents of heightened police presence to prevent any potential unrest, stating, “Residents should not panic as there will be visible police patrols to deter hoodlums from exploiting the unfortunate situation.”

The tragic incident has drawn outrage from various quarters, with many questioning the safety measures in place during the event.

Governor Makinde reiterated the state’s commitment to ensuring such incidents are not repeated and urged the public to cooperate with the investigation.
