The House of Representatives will, on December 31, 2024, present the sum of N704.91 million to President Bola Tinubu for the benefit of vulnerable Nigerians, as part of efforts to alleviate the economic hardship caused by the removal of the petrol subsidy.

The lawmakers had on July 18 resolved to slash their salaries by 50% for six months and give to poor Nigerians as part of efforts to address the economic hardship arising from the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.

Addressing his colleagues during Thursdayโ€™s plenary, the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, announced that the lawmakers had fulfilled the 50 per cent salary cut pledge and had pulled together N704.9m to be donated to poor Nigerians.

He said, โ€œIf you recall, about five months ago, we decided to contribute half of our salaries to address the critical needs of the Nigerian people. I am happy to inform you that so far, we have contributed N704,907,578.82.

โ€œOn December 31, I will lead a delegation of leadership to hand over the money to the President for the exclusive use of vulnerable Nigerians who truly need it.

โ€œThe contributions you made highlight the steadfastness and dedication of members to addressing the critical needs of Nigerians.โ€
