A Year of Failures: 12 Grid Collapses and the Endless Wait for Stable Electricity

As Nigerians reel from yet another nationwide blackout — the 12th grid collapse in just 11 months — the promise by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, to add 150 megawatts (mw) to the national grid by year-end seems to provide little comfort.

The power crisis that has long plagued Africa’s most populous nation appears unrelenting, sparking troubling questions about the effectiveness of government interventions and the future of electricity supply in the country.

A Grim Record of Failures

The latest collapse, which occurred on December 11, has become a grim milestone in Nigeria’s persistent power woes. From January to November 2024, the national grid has failed 11 times, with three collapses happening within a single week in October. Each incident plunges millions into darkness, disrupts businesses, and highlights the fragility of a system that has struggled for decades to meet the demands of a growing population.

Despite repeated assurances from successive administrations, the grid remains susceptible to total failure under stress.

Experts have often pointed to outdated infrastructure, insufficient investment, and systemic mismanagement as the root causes.

The Siemens-led Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), launched to modernize the grid, has been touted as a potential game-changer. However, its implementation has been painfully slow, leaving citizens questioning whether Nigeria’s power crisis is an issue of incompetence or neglect.

The Minister’s Promise: Enough or Too Little, Too Late?

Speaking after a meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu assured Nigerians that the ongoing Presidential Power Initiative is making progress. According to Adelabu, the project’s pilot phase is 80% complete, with 10 power transformers and 10 mobile substations already installed and commissioned. He claimed this has added 750mw to the grid capacity, with another 150mw expected by the end of the year.

“These efforts have already added 750 megawatts to our grid capacity, and by year-end, an additional 150 megawatts will be realized upon full completion of the pilot phase,” Adelabu stated.

While the promise of an additional 150mw may seem like progress, it pales in comparison to Nigeria’s energy deficit. With an installed capacity of 12,522mw and an operational capacity hovering around 4,000mw, the country falls far short of the estimated 30,000mw required to meet current demand. Even if the new 150mw materializes, it would barely scratch the surface of the problem.

Juxtaposing Progress and Reality

The contrast between the minister’s optimism and the lived reality of Nigerians is stark. On the one hand, the Siemens project promises to overhaul Nigeria’s ailing grid infrastructure, with plans to rehabilitate 14 existing substations and build 23 new ones. On the other hand, the frequency of grid collapses underscores the immediate need for solutions that go beyond incremental gains.

Adelabu’s emphasis on renewable energy sources like solar and hydropower is commendable. However, his acknowledgment of the grid’s “aging and fragile state” raises concerns about whether the Siemens initiative can deliver results quickly enough to stave off further collapses.
