The Abia State Government has secured the endorsement of the Nsulu clan in Isialangwa North Local Government Area for the Abia Airport project after initial protests from a section of the host communities.
In a meeting on Wednesday, the Chief of Staff to Governor Alex Otti, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, addressed concerns raised by some residents, assuring them of the governmentโs commitment to transparency, compensation, and inclusive development.
Ajagba attributed the earlier opposition to misinformation, stating, โThere are people who may not fully understand the governmentโs plans. This engagement ensures everyone is properly informed.โ
He reiterated the administrationโs focus on inclusive dialogue and promised further consultations with affected communities to resolve lingering concerns amicably.
Ajagba also assured residents that their livelihoods would not be jeopardized. โTraces are being cut now, and enumeration will follow to ensure compensation is paid to the host communities,โ he said.
Key representatives of the host communities, including Dr. Jessy Odu and Mr. Kingsley Ukaegbu, expressed their support for the project, emphasizing its potential to boost economic growth, create jobs, and attract development.
Odu noted that only one of the eight host communities had protested, which he attributed to a lack of accurate information.
โThe airport, when realised, will boost economic activities, create jobs for our youth, and open up the land for development,โ he added.
The meeting, attended by traditional rulers, community leaders, and the Airport Project Coordinator, Pastor Okorougo Aji, concluded with a renewed commitment from the government to maintain dialogue and ensure transparency throughout the projectโs development.
The Abia Airport project is part of Governor Alex Ottiโs broader strategy to enhance infrastructure, attract investments, and drive economic growth across the state.
With community engagement and proper implementation, the airport is expected to position Abia as a hub for regional development while fostering stronger ties between the government and its citizens.
The administration has pledged to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure the projectโs success and address any concerns that arise during its execution.
