The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) are in talks to form a potential merger ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This development was revealed by the ADC National Chairman, Ralphs Okey Nwosu, during the launch of the Digital Political Academy at the ADC Global Campus in Abuja on Thursday.
Nwosu expressed the shared commitment of both parties to justice and their goal of building a strong opposition.
“Our party, ADC, and the PRP are committed to building a virile opposition and are standing firm together on justice,” he said.
Nwosu also addressed the importance of maintaining the party’s integrity amid the current political landscape, emphasizing that they should not allow chaos to tarnish their values.
“We must not allow the chaos to overshadow our stellar character as a transformation-driven, innovative, and value-oriented political party,” he stated.
In addition to the merger talks, Nwosu highlighted the role of the newly launched Digital Political Academy in fostering a well-informed and engaged citizenry.
“This innovative initiative is designed to foster a more informed and engaged citizenry equipped with the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary to drive positive change in our society,” he said.
The ADC leader expressed his disappointment with opposition lawmakers who recently defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He pointed out that their actions came at a time when the opposition was needed most to challenge the APC government on the country’s economic and security challenges.
“The state of the nation, worsening economy, and security situation under the APC should challenge all opposition parties,” Nwosu remarked.
He also condemned the arrest of human rights activist and lawyer Dele Farotimi, calling for his immediate release.
“I am sure you are aware of the arrest of Dele Farotimi. I call on the federal authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of this honorable gentleman,” he said, urging the authorities to respect citizens’ rights.
Nwosu further elaborated on the goals of the Digital Political Academy, stating that it aims to improve political awareness and civic engagement.
“The Digital Political Academy is dedicated to creating awareness and promoting enlightenment among both incoming politicians and the general public,” he explained.
The academy will focus on civic education, leadership development, policy analysis, and voter awareness, with the aim of empowering citizens to hold politicians accountable and make informed decisions at the polls.
Through technology and innovative teaching methods, Nwosu said the academy seeks to contribute to a more informed and active citizenry.
