The Uyo Capital City Development Authority (UCCDA) has announced plans to enforce strict guidelines on the location of petrol and gas outlets within Uyo metropolis and its environments in Akwa Ibom State.
The chairman of the Authority, Anietie Eka made this known during a visit to Fonex petrol station that was gutted by fire on Saturday.
“From the 20th of January 2025, UCCDA will commence intensive enforcement checks against fuel and gas stations operating without the necessary approvals.
“No longer will we tolerate unauthorized establishments or those that flout safety protocols. Our city and its residents deserve better,” he warned.
“This unfortunate incident sheds light on the critical need for strict adherence to safety regulations and proper approvals before establishing fuel and gas stations in our city,” Eka stated.
“UCCDA has guidelines which are designed to safeguard public safety and prevent such incidents.
“The UCCDA will embark on a comprehensive review of all existing fuel stations, assessing their compliance with safety regulations and operational permits,” he said.
He disclosed that the UCCDA has set up a committee to investigate the cause of the fire and expressed its commitment to enforce these regulations as it reflects the broader initiative to enhance urban safety and development in the Capital City.
“We will not hesitate to shut down any station found to be operating illegally, and appropriate sanctions will be imposed on violators,” he added.
Eka commended Firefighters for prompt intervention in containing the flames, which were fueled by the large quantities of fuel stored in a truck at the filling station.
According to him, no casualties were reported adding however that several property in the vicinity suffered damage due to the intensity of the fire.
The incident has brought concern over the proliferation of unauthorized fuel and gas stations in close proximity to residential areas.
