Army Arrests FIJ’s Fisayo Soyombo In Port Harcourt

The Nigeria Army has reportedly arrested Nigerian investigative journalist, Fisayo Soyombo, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for yet-to-be-stated reasons.

Soyombo, the founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), was said to have been arrested by the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army on Tuesday.

The FIJ confirmed the development on Friday via its official handle on X (Formerly Twitter), saying, “The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt has been detaining our founder @fisayosoyombo 3 days running.”

The FIJ noted that Soyombo had gone incommunicado since November 26.

“He has been incommunicado for three days and we have to investigate as a team. Earlier this morning, we got the notification from multiple sources within the military that he’s in their custody and that’s all we have for now,” Daniel Ojukwu, a staff member of FIJ, told HumAngle.

Ojukwu said the FIJ team could not immediately establish why Soyombo was being detained.

The FIJ further noted that the Army had also seized his devices, demanding that “The Army must preserve his evidence and truth. Don’t destroy the evidence. We insist the truth must come out. It’s in your custody, don’t destroy the evidence.”

Soyombo’s arrest came two months after the FIJ disclosed that the Department of State Services (DSS) was after their founder.
