THE Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has instructed its members to return to work starting Monday, December 16, 2024.
This decision comes after the conclusion of a two-week industrial action that took place from December 2 to December 15, 2024.
ASUP President Shammah Kpanja stated that the call for polytechnic lecturers to resume their duties followed a warning strike due to the government’s failure to implement nine key items from a work plan created in collaboration with ASUP to address ongoing trade dispute issues.
“During the strike, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment held a conciliation meeting on December 9, 2024, between our union and government representatives to seek a resolution and avert a potential indefinite strike,” Kpanja explained.
“At this meeting, a new memorandum of understanding was signed, with an agreement to hold another meeting on January 23, 2025, to evaluate compliance from both parties and discuss further concerns.
“Following this meeting, the Union’s National Executive Council will convene to assess the situation.
“Due to these developments, all union members are directed to resume work on Monday, December 16, 2024.
“We appreciate and commend our members for their dedication and patience, and we hope the government will actively work towards a satisfactory resolution of the outstanding issues.”
