The 1 Division of the Nigerian Army in Kaduna was abuzz with activities on Wednesday as Nigerian veteran singer, John Asiemo, popularly known as Daddy Showkey, entertained wounded soldiers and their families.
The event, held in celebration of Christmas, was organised by the Tribute to Our Troops Foundation in collaboration with the Office of the Chief of Defence Staff and the leadership of the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Daddy Showkey, who was dressed in military regalia, expressed his dedication to honouring military personnel who have sacrificed for the nation.
“I have been performing for years to honour our troops. Performing for the wounded soldiers is my way of helping them relax and ease their stress amidst their medical challenges,” he told newsmen.
He added that his mission extended beyond music. “It is not about music alone, it is about changing people’s lives, which is the most important thing for me,” Showkey added.
The event fostered a sense of community among military personnel, their families, and civilians.
According to Ms. Olivia Adom, founder of the Tribute to Our Troops Foundation, the gathering was a means of improving civil-military relations and promoting respect for the armed forces.
“The armed forces have given up their freedom and homes. They signed off their human rights to protect the country’s integrity,” Adom stated.
She highlighted the Foundation’s role in honouring fallen heroes and celebrating the dedication of active service members.
Earlier, Rear Admiral Idi Abass, Chief of Civil-Military Relations at Defence Headquarters, described the event as a non-kinetic strategy to strengthen ties between the military and civilians.
He noted that the Chief of Defence Staff was committed to building a people-centric armed forces, adding that such initiatives are essential for projecting the military in a positive light.
The attendees included Maj.-Gen. Marcus Kangye, Corps Commander Artillery, Maj.-Gen. Mayirenso Saraso, and General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division Nigerian Army, alongside other senior officers and soldiers.
