Former Governor of Bayelsa State and Senator representing Bayelsa West senatorial district, Senator Seriake Dickson, has reiterated his stance that education is the only reliable tool for societal transformation.
Dickson, the immediate past governor and Chancellor of Hensard University, Toru-Orua, made the remarks at the universityโs first-ever matriculation ceremony on Monday.
The senator emphasized that while infrastructural developments such as roads and bridges are vital, they are incomplete without the investment in human capital.
He expressed that his commitment to education is rooted in the belief that the true progress of any society lies in nurturing the minds of its people.
โThe focus of Hensard University is not just academic excellence, but the total development of the human being,โ Dickson said, addressing the new students.
โI urge you to stay focused and strive for excellence, as the university has set high standards to prepare you for leadership and success.โ
Dickson further called on the universityโs leadership to continue its efforts in achieving the vision of combining academic rigor with skill development and industry mentorship.
This approach, he said, aims to produce well-rounded leaders and entrepreneurial graduates.
He also announced that the university is preparing for its second academic session, which will introduce professional courses in fields such as Law, Medicine, Engineering, Nursing, and Pharmacy, among others.
In his address, Bayelsa Stateโs Acting Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, congratulated the matriculants and urged them to take their studies seriously.
He affirmed that education is the key to global success, reinforcing Dicksonโs vision of education as a transformative force.
Ewhrudjakpo, who was represented by Dr. Gentle Emelah, the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Education, praised Dickson for his long-term educational vision, which has materialized in the establishment of Hensard University.
He acknowledged the senatorโs commitment to service and humanity through the founding of the institution.
In his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of Hensard University, Professor Dileep Kumar, expressed gratitude to Senator Dickson for bringing his dream to life.
He urged the students to take their academic pursuits seriously, underscoring the importance of education in realizing their aspirations.
The ceremony culminated in a group photo with Senator Dickson, the universityโs management staff, and the new matriculants, marking a historic moment for the institution.
