Dr Max Nduaguibe, a former director of Alex Otti’s 2019 campaign, has been arrested in Abia State for allegedly inciting public opposition to the proposed airport project in Nsulu, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area.
Reports indicate that over 40 police officers stormed Nduaguibe’s residence in Mbawsi at about 4 am on the day of the arrest.
Speaking from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Umuahia, Nduaguibe described the arrest as unjust and shocking, stating that he was never invited by the police prior to the incident.
“They came around 4 am, banging at my gate with over 40 policemen in four vans,” Nduaguibe said.
“They claimed I was being arrested over a petition but refused to tell me the details. I asked why they didn’t simply issue an invitation, but they had no explanation.
“This is an infringement on my fundamental rights. It is unacceptable in a democracy.”
The former deputy national chairman of the defunct Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN) said the police accused him of inciting opposition to the Abia airport project.
However, he denied participating in any protests, noting that while he had raised concerns about the project, his opposition had been limited to public commentary.
“Is it a crime to stand against the government’s plans to forcibly take my people’s land?” Nduaguibe asked.
“I’ve not been seen protesting. This seems like an attempt to silence me, but I cannot be intimidated.”
The police reportedly remained stationed outside his residence until about 10 am, drawing a crowd of villagers who gathered in protest against his arrest.
Nduaguibe suggested the arrest was linked to his recent criticism of the government’s alleged plans to seize land for the airport project in Nsulu.
He continues to remain in detention at the SCID in Umuahia as of the time of this report.
