Justice Maryanne Anenih of the Federal Capital Territory High Court has granted bail to former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello in the sum of ₦500 million with three sureties in like sum.
Bello, who is facing trial for alleged money laundering of ₦110 billion alongside two others, pleaded not guilty to the 16-count charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The court had initially rejected Bello’s bail application on December 10, deeming it premature as it was filed before his arraignment. However, the defence later filed a fresh application.
During Thursday’s proceedings, Bello’s counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, informed the court of discussions with the prosecution aimed at expediting the trial.
He urged the court to grant bail and requested a broader scope for the locations of properties used as sureties, expanding beyond Maitama to other areas in the Federal Capital Territory.
EFCC counsel Olukayode Enitan, SAN, confirmed the discussions, adding, “As per legal tradition, we are cooperating with the defence and leave the decision to your lordship’s discretion.”
In her ruling, Justice Anenih stated that the charges were bailable and granted the application with conditions. The sureties must own landed property in specified areas, including Maitama, Jabi, and Asokoro.
Bello is also required to surrender his international passport and remain at Kuje Correctional Centre until he meets the bail conditions.
