The Federal Government has approved an upward review of allowances for officers in the public service, marking a significant policy shift aimed at improving the welfare of civil servants across the country.
The allowances under review include Duty Tour Allowance, transport allowances, uniform allowances, and overtime allowances.
This decision was made during the 46th meeting of the National Council on Establishment (NCE), which was chaired by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack.
The NCE, the highest policy-making body for public service matters in Nigeria, includes the Heads of Service from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to a report the meeting followed a two-day technical session led by the Permanent Secretary of the Service Policies and Strategies Office.
The session was attended by permanent secretaries, directors of establishments, and other key stakeholders from across the states and FCT.
The Director of Organisation Design and Development served as the session’s secretary.
During the meeting, 32 memoranda were reviewed, and among the key decisions made, six were approved, including the upward review of allowances for public service officers.
The NCE also approved a comprehensive review of the Schemes of Service to align with the new decisions.
The approved increase in allowances is expected to provide significant financial relief for public service officers, particularly those who regularly incur expenses related to travel, uniforms, and overtime work.
The upward adjustment of these allowances reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the welfare needs of civil servants while ensuring that the public service remains efficient and motivated in the performance of its duties.
