The federal government has commenced free train rides nationwide to ease financial pressures on Nigerians during the festive season.
The initiative runs from 20th December to 5th January 2025, covering multiple routes.
Speaking at the Kubwa train station in Abuja on Friday, Acting Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr Ben Iloanusi, projected that over 340,000 passengers would benefit from the programme.
“Today marks the first free ride palliative set by the federal government, and it’s a very grand idea. We assure Nigerians that we will enforce the free train ride and ensure its success,” Iloanusi said.
Passengers can book tickets online at no cost and are required to present valid identification, such as a NIN, international passport, or driver’s licence, at the station.
For those unable to book online, NRC staff will profile them before boarding.
Highlighting the expected volume, Iloanusi stated, “We have an average of 20,000 passengers daily across routes including Abuja-Kaduna, Lagos-Ibadan, Port Harcourt-Aba, Lagos-Mass Transit, and Warri-Itakpe. We anticipate seamless operations throughout the period.”
Security and crowd management measures have also been reinforced.
“We’ve beefed up security and limited passengers to purchasing no more than two tickets to prevent hoarding. I encourage Nigerians to arrive at least 45 minutes before departure to ensure a smooth boarding process,” he added.
Passengers have praised the initiative, though concerns about orderliness and the booking process were raised.
Isah Slaisu, who boarded from Rigasa in Kaduna, said, “This is a very good initiative that has saved me money. However, I noticed a lack of order, which I hope will improve in the coming days,” The Nation reports.
Another passenger, Maria Balogun, criticised the ticketing system, alleging deliberate delays by staff.
“I struggled to book online and had to go to the station amidst the crowd. Some passengers paid staff to secure spots on the train. The process needs improvement,” she said.
Reacting to these complaints, Iloanusi assured passengers that the NRC would address the issues promptly to ensure a better experience.
“This initiative demonstrates the federal government’s commitment to alleviating the burdens on Nigerians during this season,” he concluded.
