The Federal Government has taken over the management of the Marhai Forest Reserve in Nasarawa State, upgrading it to a National Park.
In a statement on Friday, Ibrahim Haruna, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Environment, announced the development, describing it as a significant step towards sustainable development under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Minister of Environment Balarabe Lawal called the move a milestone in cooperative federalism, where federal and state governments collaborate for sustainability.
“The journey to upgrade the Forest Reserve began in 2011, and it has now become a reality despite some challenges associated with the effective management of the reserve, which the ministry is addressing with the help of relevant stakeholders locally and internationally,” Lawal said.
He also urged the host community to support efforts by the ministry and the National Park Service (NPS) to elevate the park to global standards.
Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State highlighted the reserve’s ecological and cultural significance, describing it as a jewel in the state’s biodiversity.
“This is a crucial step in preserving our natural heritage and promoting sustainable environmental stewardship for present and future generations,” Sule said.
The governor urged the NPS to enhance the park’s eco-tourism potential while fostering community development and engagement.
He called for inclusivity in the partnership, aiming to make Marhai Forest Reserve a global model of conservation excellence and environmental stability.
