The Federal Government has expressed concern over the escalating post-election violence in Mozambique, which has reportedly claimed over 121 lives and left more than 380 injured.
In a statement on Friday, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesman for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, called for calm and urged aggrieved political actors to seek redress through legal means.
“Our thoughts are with the government of the Republic of Mozambique and the families of all those affected by the dreadful crisis,” the statement read.
The violence erupted following the Constitutional Council’s confirmation of Daniel Chapo of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) as the presidential election winner with 65% of the vote.
The results were rejected by the opposition leader, sparking protests in cities like Maputo, Beira, and Nampula.
