Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives during recent palliative distribution events, attributing the tragedies to the severe hunger and poverty gripping Nigeria.
In a statement posted on X on Sunday, Obi extended his condolences to the affected families, communities, and states.
He described the incidents as a grim reminder of the dire economic challenges facing the nation.
“These tragic events, resulting from palliative distributions, highlight the severe hunger and poverty devastating our country. I am deeply pained by the loss of precious lives and the suffering of our people,” Obi stated.
The former Anambra governor also addressed the arrest of those involved in a palliative distribution programme in Oyo State, including the former wife of the Ooni of Ife. He criticised the government’s decision, urging it to reconsider its actions.
“Acts of goodwill, even when they result in unfortunate outcomes, should not be criminalised. This particular effort was aimed at alleviating suffering and bringing relief to the people.
“I appeal to the government to show compassion and review this decision,” Obi remarked.
He further argued that systemic governance failures, not individuals trying to help, should be blamed for the widespread hardship in the country.
“If accountability is to be pursued, it should begin with the leaders and policymakers whose decisions—or lack thereof—have created the suffering we witness today.
“The systemic failure of governance is the root cause, not the efforts of well-meaning citizens,” Obi said.
Calling for urgent reforms, Obi emphasised the need to address the underlying causes of hunger and poverty.
“He urged national leaders to adopt policies that uplift citizens and prevent future tragedies.
“As a nation, we must refocus our priorities on creating a system that ensures no citizen is left desperate for basic necessities. Our policies and actions should be directed at uplifting lives and rebuilding trust among our people,” Obi urged.
He concluded by advocating for inclusive reforms to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges, stressing the importance of preventing similar tragedies in the future.
