Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, has unveiled plans to establish an entertainment village aimed at uncovering and nurturing talents within the state.
According to the governor, the entertainment industry possesses the dual power to generate substantial income for the nation while engaging Nigerian youths in meaningful ways.
The governor shared this vision on the 17th of December, 2024, during a courtesy visit to his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, by the internationally acclaimed artist and Ogun State indigene, Bukola Elemide, famously known as Asa.
Describing Asa as a “pride of the Gateway State,” Abiodun praised the Paris-born singer and songwriter for her remarkable contributions to music and her role as a global ambassador for both Ogun State and Nigeria.
During the visit, Governor Abiodun christened Asa with the Yoruba name “Omobowale,” emphasizing her deep connection to her roots.
“Ogun State indigenes are versatile, cerebral, and a rare breed who have done the nation proud. The destiny of this nation and our state is intertwined. We have been involved from the beginning,” he said. Highlighting the state’s artistic wealth, he added, “We are blessed with talents with a high level of creativity. No wonder our people are excelling in all human endeavors.”
Abiodun commended Asa for elevating her craft to the global stage, noting, “You do what you do effortlessly. Your music appeals to the entire world.
The quality of your music and the crowd you pull say a lot.”
The governor also highlighted his administration’s strides in reviving Ogun State’s cultural heritage, particularly the Adire fabric, which he revealed would soon be made into school uniforms to preserve tradition and create job opportunities.
He praised Asa’s music for its philosophical depth, cultural richness, and its role in promoting Yoruba language and African heritage globally.
“There is no doubt that her surname, Elemide, is peculiar to Ogun State, and it depicts a significant identity of our state.
You must therefore be very proud of that distinct identity and pedigree. We are indeed very happy that we invited you over, and you obliged us by coming to visit; it is on that note that I christen you Omobowale,” Abiodun remarked.
In response, Asa, who hails from the Itoko area of Abeokuta, expressed pride in her heritage and pledged to maintain a strong connection to her roots. She also promised to visit the state more often, reinforcing her commitment to her cultural identity.
