Happening now: China, Malaysia, others welcome New Year 2025

Countries across Asia including China, Malaysia and India have welcomed in the new year with firework displays and drone shows.

Also, Bangladesh has welcomed 2025 after a year of significant upheaval.

In August, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned after weeks of deadly anti-government protests, putting an end to her more than two decades dominating the countryโ€™s politics.

Jubilant crowds took to the streets to celebrate the news, while the PM fled the country.

An interim government was formed in the aftermath and the administration later confirmed elections could be held by the end of 2025.

Before Bangladesh ushered in the new year, thousands of Bangladeshis attended a โ€œMarch for Unityโ€ in Dhaka, the countryโ€™s capital, to mark the student-led uprising and pay tribute to those killed in the violence.
