Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has called for a thorough investigation into the tragic stampede that claimed the lives of 35 children at a funfair in Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, Speaker Abbas described the incident as a heartbreaking loss.
He extended his condolences to the government and people of Oyo State, especially the bereaved families.
“This tragedy is a painful reminder of the need for stricter safety measures during public events.
“I urge all relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking incident and ensure accountability,” Abbas stated.
The Speaker also urged event organisers to prioritise safety and called for vigilance during the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations to prevent similar occurrences.
He prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed that 35 children lost their lives in the stampede, with six others sustaining injuries.
Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu also expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
He extended his condolences to the government, people of Oyo State, and the families affected, describing the tragedy as unimaginable.
In a statement, Kalu said, “We are profoundly disturbed by this tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with those who have been impacted by this devastating event.
“As we mourn the loss of these young lives, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting initiatives that promote safety, well-being, and the protection of human life.
“I urge all stakeholders to work together to ensure that such tragedies are prevented in the future.”
Kalu concluded by offering prayers for the victims’ families and the repose of the departed souls, adding, “May we all find strength in our collective grief.”
