The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has rejected claims that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, instructed Nigerians to assault officers during stop-and-search operations.
Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi issued a statement on Monday dismissing the viral reports as false and misleading.
“The Nigeria Police Force refutes the baseless claim that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, directed citizens to throw objects or physically attack officers who request to check their phones,” the statement read.
Adejobi emphasised that the IGP has not encouraged violence against law enforcement personnel.
Instead, he has consistently urged the public to report instances of police misconduct through legitimate avenues.
“The IGP’s stance promotes accountability and adherence to the rule of law, not acts of violence,” he noted.
The statement also urged Nigerians to be cautious of fake news and verify information from credible sources before sharing or acting on it.
The NPF reaffirmed its dedication to strengthening trust and collaboration between the police and communities across the country.
