INMATES in custodial facilities across Kano State will now benefit from improved healthcare services, following their inclusion in the State’s Healthcare Contributory Scheme.
The initiative, designed to provide comprehensive health coverage for inmates, was announced during a visit by Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, Executive Secretary of the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KACHMA), to the Kano State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
A statement from the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Nasarawa, highlighted the state government’s dedication to enhancing inmate welfare.
During the visit, Dr. Muktar affirmed the government’s commitment:
“We are fully prepared to ensure that inmates in our facilities receive quality healthcare. This enrolment guarantees access to essential and comprehensive health services, promoting their well-being and supporting their reformation.”
The Controller of Corrections for Kano State, Ado Inuwa, expressed appreciation for the initiative, describing it as a significant stride in improving inmates’ living conditions.
“This measure will not only improve inmates’ health but also encourage them to become productive and law-abiding citizens after their release,” Inuwa stated.
“Healthcare is vital for effective custodial management, and this effort will significantly enhance the reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration process.”
He also stressed the importance of ongoing collaboration between the state government and correctional facilities to prioritize the health and welfare of inmates.
The new policy will cover routine medical check-ups, emergency care, and other essential services, underscoring the state government’s commitment to social welfare and justice.
