The Kwara State Government has taken disciplinary action against a teacher accused of assaulting a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member at Government Day Junior Secondary School, Kulende, Ilorin.
A joint statement issued on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, and the Chairman of the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mallam Tauheed Abubakar, announced the teacher’s demotion and transfer.
The incident reportedly happened last Thursday when the corps member visited the school to collect her clearance letter.
She was allegedly attacked and stripped by some teachers for not greeting them appropriately.
According to a statement from TESCOM’s Press Secretary, Bola Onile, an investigative panel found Hajia Hamzat Fatimoh Nike guilty of misconduct, including fighting on duty, using inappropriate language, insubordination, and disrespecting the NYSC uniform, a symbol of national identity.
“Her actions violated public service rules. Consequently, she has been demoted by two grade levels, transferred to another school, and will participate in counselling sessions,” the statement said.
The government expressed regret over the incident, assuring the NYSC management that it does not reflect the values of Kwara State.
“Such behaviour will not be tolerated, and we are committed to preventing a recurrence,” it added.
Teachers were reminded to act in accordance with professional ethics and public service standards. The government also pledged to enhance training on ethical conduct and service delivery.
In response to the incident, the NYSC temporarily withdrew all corps members from both the junior and senior sections of the school.
NYSC State Public Relations Officer Oladipo Morakinyo confirmed the withdrawal, stating that it was done to safeguard the corps members and prevent further issues.
